Ooty,
the Scotland of the East, is one of the most exotic holiday
destinations in Tamil Nadu, South India. The most beautiful and
picturesque hill station of South India Ooty is popularly known as
the 'Queen of the Blue Mountains' or 'Queen of Hill Stations' among
the tourists |
|
The presence
of large number of tea estates classifies Ooty as the
'land of tea gardens'. Lofty mountains, dense forest, sprawling
grasslands and miles and miles of tea gardens greet the passengers
on most routes.
Tourist Activities
Ooty has plenty of tourist attractions. The Botanical Gardens are
full
of shady trees, myriad ornamental plants and flowers. The main
attraction here is the fossilized tree trunk, which is about 20
million years old. Established in the year 1848 the gardens are
formally laid
out with lily ponds, and there are clipped bushes in the form of
elephants, with raised trunks. You can find wide varieties of plants
including some thirty types of eucalyptus in these gardens.
Another major tourists spot is Ooty Lake, which is at about 1-km of
distance. It is an artificial lake constructed by John Suvillian,
the
first Collector and virtual founder of Ooty in 1824. You can enjoy
boating in this beautiful lake every day from 8 am to 6 pm.
The other adventure here is climbing up on the highest peak in the
Blue Mountains at 8,606 ft-Doddabetta where the Eastern and the
Western Ghats merge.
Ooty organizes a number of carnivals all through the year. The most
popular among them are the annual Tea and Tourism Festival in
January, Bookkapurma Mariamman an annual festival and the Ooty
Mariamman in April and May attracts crowds in huge numbers. Various
Boat Races, Summer Festival and Dog Shows are organized during the
festivals.
